Biopsychosocial Model of Chronic Pain

Biopsychosocial pain disorders are, by definition, disorders having three dimensions: biological, psychological, and social. Limiting the evaluation and management of a chronic pain condition to a one-dimensional biological perspective often fails to fully explain the patient’s symptoms. Consequently, assessment and management require not only the examination of the biological dimension but also of the psychological and social dimensions. These two critical aspects of pain in an individual’s life are often overlooked in the routine assessment of pain.
