Treatment of Ulcerative Colitis for Improved Patient Outcomes and Quality of Life

Patients with ulcerative colitis are managed on long-term medications to maintain remission and mucosal healing. Patients may not understand the importance of maintaining therapy once they begin to feel better. Further, patients may experience side effects and may quit their medication or not take as prescribed. To improve patient adherence, health care professionals must explain the rationale for long-term therapy and explain how to manage side effects.
